On horseback at half past two

In 1839 the superior of the whole Madurai mission stayed behind here while his bishop went down alone to the coast, so as to keep the village's great novena and the solemn feast of St Francis Xavier. Fr Joseph Bertrand rode the last stage in the dark. “The 23rd. On horseback at half past two; at eight o'clock, arrival at Vadakencoulam, mass and the opening of the novena and of the administration.” That Mass opened nine days of feast, and with them the year's round of confessions and communions for the whole congregation.

Le 20. — A deux heures du matin première messe, puis messe de Monseigneur et confirmation de cent cinquante personnes. — Le soir, à trois heures et demie, en route pour Putécalenviley, où je’ passe du cheval au confessionnal jusqu’à une heure très-avancée de la nuit. Le 21.— De grand matin, deux messes, confirmations; puis tout le jour confessions très-nombreuses. Le 22. — A deux heures du matin première messe, puis messe de Monseigneur et environ deux cents confirmations ; à quatre heures du matin à cheval, et voyage toute la journée. Le 23. — À deux heures et demie à cheval; à huit beures, arrivée à Vadakenccoulam, messe et ouverture de la neuvaine et de l’administration. | Et cette vie durait plus ou moins la même depuis quatre mois | sans compter les peines morales, les anxiétés, les chagrins. Vous voyez que je n'ai pas trop droit de me plaindre de ma sauté si à la fin elle a paru faire défaut ; il y a une limite à tout. ‘ Ces fatigues du confessionnal et de l’administration n'étaient guère interrompues que par les voyages, et ces voyages n'étaient pas précisément des promenades d’agrément, surtout pendant la saison des pluies qui a coincidé avec ces visites. Celte époque réunit à un soleil toujours à peu près aussi fatigant, le grave inconvénient de l'humidité dans les cabanes et des inondations dans les campagnes. What this source establishes

Bertrand's own journal of 23 November 1839, on the page that carries the whole week of it — confessions to nine at night, first mass at two in the morning, a hundred and thirty confessions in a day, the burning sun. He is the superior of the mission and the author, he calls the passage a journal, and he wrote it for his provincial in Lyon. The letter's frame is the Vicar Apostolic's six-month visitation; the bishop went on alone to the coast while Bertrand stayed here for the novena and the feast of St Francis Xavier.
