1944
The Rosarians, the first contemplative order of men founded in Asia, were begun at Jaffna in 1928 by Fr B. A. Thomas, and came to Vadakkankulam on 13 February 1944. Antony Susainather, whom the order honours as a Servant of God, had bought four acres with the diocese's help and raised a small chapel and living quarters on it; and on the day the monks arrived, Bishop Roche came out and blessed the place: the same bishop who, eighteen years before, had called this village Little Rome. It was the first Rosarian house on Indian soil. The Fathers keep it still, and with the Servite and the Bethany Sisters they belong to the ordinary week of the parish.
What this source establishes
The SOLE witness for the 1944 foundation, and the source of the title "Servant of God" — which is the congregation's own usage, with no decree of the Holy See in evidence. The diocese's own biography of Bishop Roche tells it differently, crediting the Ashram's establishment to Roche.
