What the Bishop asked for

Coming back into his mission from the Malabar coast in 1848, Bishop Alexis Canoz entered it by this village. In his own account of the year he set this place down as “Vadakencoulam, a great and good Christian community, of which I made the visitation.” He came on the 21st of June, and before he went he asked the people to begin putting money aside for a large new church. They were not a rich village. It took them seven years. Then he came back and blessed the stone.

In English

“After spending some weeks with the Bishop of Verapoly, which were a pleasant and wholesome rest, I re-entered our mission by Vadakencoulam, a great and good Christian community, of which I made the visitation; and from there I went back up, sometimes following the coast, sometimes visiting the corresponding Christian communities inland.”

What this source establishes

The bishop himself, in his own letter, on this village — and he is the man who would bless the foundation stone of the great church in 1855 and the finished church in 1872. Written from Trichinopoly in March 1849 about the visitation he had begun in January 1848: over twelve thousand confirmed in the year, some twenty thousand confessions, and Fr Grégoire, the future builder of this church, in his party throughout. He says NOTHING about money or a new church — that part is the parish's memory, and the dot's footnote says so.
