1773–1775
The last of the old fathers
In 1773 Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus in every country in the world. The Jesuits left in Tinnevelly, here and at Talai and Manapar, died one by one, and priests from Goa took their places. The last of the old fathers here was Clement Thomassini. Feeling his end near, he “had himself carried to Talai, to Fr Antoine Douarte”, and there he died in 1775, seventy-five years old. With him the first Jesuit century at Vadakkankulam closed.
In English
"Feeling his end approach, he had himself carried to Talai, to Fr Antoine Douarte, and died in 1775, aged 75."
What this source establishes
The only primary witness to Fr Thomassini's death: he had himself carried to Talai, to Fr Antoine Douarte, and died THERE in 1775, aged seventy-five. Not at Vadakkankulam.
