From thatch to brick

By 1749 de Britto's thatch could no longer hold the congregation, and Fr Buttari set about a lasting church to replace it. He “laid the foundations” of it, and Fr Thomassini carried it to completion. By the parish's own record it rose in broad bricks, its foundation stone blessed at a kankol festival the parish dates to 1749.

What this source establishes

The fabric of Buttari's church, from the parish's own English history: broad bricks carted from Perungudi, not stone. Its date is said to rest on two inscriptions once set inside the old church, which nobody on this project has seen.
