Foundation of the first stone church

In 1749 Fr Buttari held the kankol (foundation-stone) festival for a larger, lasting church, for the Catholic community had grown too great for de Britto's old thatched shelter. The parish's own history says it was raised of broad bricks brought from Perungudi. It was the beginning of the first permanent church here, whose bell, half a century later, would summon the village to the weeping of Our Lady.
