The sisters and the girls' school

In April 1892 the Sisters of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows — Indian religious, formed at Trichinopoly in 1876 — numbered sixty-five, and the Jesuit historian Auguste Jean names Vadakkankulam among the four houses they kept beyond that city. Their special work, he writes, is the education of girls, and everywhere "they direct flourishing schools." The Society's Roman register sets the priest here down as chaplain of that convent of Indian nuns and director of its school — in 1900, and again in 1914 under Fr Caussanel.
