The sweet names of Jesus and Mary
Three years of it: paraded through the towns on a buffalo, scourged, and chained for months to a tree in the wilderness. On 14 January 1752 they took him out to the Travancore lines at the Aralvaimozhi gap and shot him, and “the martyr expired, repeating the sweet names of Jesus and Mary”. His body was gathered into the church of St Francis Xavier at Kottar, where the Bishop of Cochin had the Te Deum sung and preached the martyr's panegyric himself. Vadakkankulam kept what it could of him: a part of his garment, and the chains he had been bound with. His wife, baptised Gnanapoo Theresa, lies in the parish cemetery, under a stone that gives the year of her death as 1766.
In English
"He said to them: 'I have fulfilled my duty towards my God; do yours.' The soldiers fired three shots at him which did not wound him mortally; they came a little nearer, fired a second volley, and the martyr expired, repeating the sweet names of Jesus and Mary, at the age of forty-seven, four years after his baptism, and so crowned a continual martyrdom of three years."
What this source establishes
The execution — the two volleys, the names of Jesus and Mary, the three years of continual martyrdom. Bertrand describes the place as the Travancore lines at the gap, and never names it. "Kattadimalai" appears in no historical source.
