Three years of it: paraded through the towns on a buffalo, scourged, and chained for months to a tree in the wilderness. On 14 January 1752 they took him out to the Travancore lines at the Aralvaimozhi gap and shot him, and “the martyr expired, repeating the sweet names of Jesus and Mary”. His body was gathered into the church of St Francis Xavier at Kottar, where the Bishop of Cochin had the Te Deum sung and preached the martyr's panegyric himself. Vadakkankulam kept what it could of him: a part of his garment, and the chains he had been bound with. His wife, baptised Gnanapoo Theresa, lies in the parish cemetery, under a stone that gives the year of her death as 1766.
What this source establishes
The Holy See's own record of the rite gives the year, and only the year. The day and month come from Auguste Jean — whose printed year for it is a misprint. The date is assembled from two sources, neither of which gives it whole.
